The Aviation Unit, governed by the Virginia Department of State Police, has been operational since 1984. It provides administration and coordination services for aviation resources. The unit maintains helicopters and eurocopters for medical evacuation operations. The Aviation Unit also has Cessna 182 airplanes. It operates bases in Manassas, Abingdon, Lynchburg and Richmond in Virginia. In addition, the unit offers aircraft for rescue and law enforcement applications. The Aviation Unit provides medical evacuation programs. It also offers transportation solutions for critically injured patients. The unit provides Med-Flight II and Med-Flight III programs. The Aviation Unit offers aerial support to federal, state and municipal agencies.
