NEW YORK'S UNIQUE LINGUISTIC MAKEUP New York City, the most populous city in the state of New York is home to over 8 million people (more 20 million in the metropolitan area) who speak approximately 800 languages. This makes the Big Apple linguistically the most diverse city in the world. First settled by the European colonists in the early 17th century, the city served as a gateway for immigrants from all over the world for more than three centuries and remains the main entry point for most immigrants to the present day. English is of course the most commonly spoken language in the City of New York. A continuous influx of immigrants from other language groups, however, led to an increase of non-English speaking New Yorkers. According to the 2012 Community Survey by the Census Bureau, only slightly more than one half of residents speak English as the only language at home. The other half of New Yorkers speak one of several hundred languages that can be heard all over the city. The most commonly spoken non-English language is Spanish or Spanish Creole (approximately 25 percent), followed by Chinese, Russian, Indic languages, French Creole, Italian and Yiddish. A large portion of New Yorkers speaking other than English at home don't speak English language particularly well. In addition to being a melting pot of many different nationalities and ethnicities, New York City is also a melting pot of business, finance, commerce, culture, art, media, fashion, education, research and entertainment. Each year, the Big Apple is visited by millions of people for business or pleasure, or both, while many don't speak English.
