      The Environmental Protection Agency, also known as EPA, employs more than 17,000 people throughout the United States. The agency maintains over five regional offices and nearly 10 laboratories. It works to protect the human health and environment through research- and education-based services. The Environmental Protection Agency specializes in wastewater, resources and acquisition management services. The agency also conducts a variety of monitoring, standard setting and enforcement activities. It supports Brownfields, Great Lakes National and National Estuary programs. In addition, the agency conducts research on several issues, such as water pollution, air quality and science, and pollutants and toxics. It operates the Office of Air and Radiation, Office of Environmental Information, Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance, and Office of Research and Development. Established in 1970, the Environmental Protection Agency is administered by the government of the United States.
