Founded in 1881, the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) offers a variety of waste collection and disposal services. The department provides recycling and street sweeping programs. It is one of the world's largest departments that collects more than 12,000 tons of residential and institutional refuse and recyclables every day. The New York City Department of Sanitation has a staff of over 9,000 employees. The department s fleet of nearly 5,500 vehicles includes collection trucks, mechanical street sweepers, front-end loaders, and salt and sand spreaders. It administers an export program that handles approximately 12,000 tons of residential waste. The New York City Department of Sanitation offers scheduled curbside and containerized refuse collection services for public schools and institutions.
