      General Info
      Bernard Gitler, MD, is Chief of Cardiology and an Attending Cardiologist at Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital; in addition, he sees patients at White Plains Hospital. He is a member of the Montefiore Westchester Heart Specialists Group in New Rochelle and is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Gitler’s clinical expertise includes coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation and anticoagulation, hypertension, elevated cholesterol treatment, stress testing, echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, Holter monitoring, and sports cardiology.In 1972, Dr. Gitler received two Bachelor of Science degrees [in chemistry and in life sciences (biology)] at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He then attended Weill Cornell Medical College where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1976. Dr. Gitler began his postgraduate training in 1976 with a three-year internship and residency in internal medicine at Jacobi Medical Center affiliated with Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He then completed a fellowship in cardiology in 1981, becoming Chief Cardiology Fellow in his final year, at Moses/Montefiore Medical Center.Dr. Gitler is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, Critical Care Medicine, and Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is also board certified in Adult Echocardiography, and Nuclear Cardiology, and is an instructor of Advanced Cardiac Life Support.Extending from his cardiology specialties, Dr. Gitler’s research has focused on myocardial infarction and congestive heart failure clinical trials. He has been a Principal Investigator on numerous research projects at Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals, books, and abstracts. He has received numerous teaching awards as well.Dr. Gitler has received Honors by many professional societies, and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American College of Critical Care Medicine, the American Society of Echocardiography, and the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology. Since 2002 Dr. Gitler has been named among Westchester Magazine’s Top Doctors and since 1994 among New York Metro Area’s Top Doctors.
