- The New Orleans Police Department s history dates back to 1796. The department provides police services, including police response to calls for service, proactive patrol and crime prevention, and follow up investigations into major criminal offenses. It also provides manpower for the many special events occurring in New Orleans, including parades, festivals and dignitary protection. The New Orleans Police Department is divided into eight police districts geographically located throughout the city. Each district is commanded by a police captain, who has the primary responsibility and accountability for all law enforcement activities. District officers may be deployed in uniform or plain clothes and a variety of deployment techniques are used. Officers may patrol in automobiles, on motorcycles, scooters or horseback, by bicycle or on foot patrol. They conduct follow-up investigations on all major offenses that occur in their area. The New Orleans Police Department has more than 50 employees and support staff at an office location along Royal Street.
