This was the absolute best meal we had in four days in New Orleans! My fried oysters were sublime, my son's filet was the best he's ever had (he's eaten steak in every city he's ever visited), the barbecue shrimp was a taste of paradise. We ate there twice in three days; I would've had the barbecue shrimp again and again! My only complaint? On Friday afternoon our service was top notch. On Sunday, the wait staff seemed bored and even a bit rude, but the food was still heavenly!
I just got back from a trip to New Orleans and I had the pleasure of finding Mr. B's Bistro. I enjoyed the food and service so much that I went back a second time!
The shrimp and grits meal is so yummy. My husband even liked it and he cannot stand eating grits. We loved it so much we bought their cookbook!
It was simply a fantastic time, with great food, great staff, and great atmosphere. The variety of entrees our group of 12 had were flavorful, filling, inventful, and fun. The staff was great, including one waiter, who made a very hilarious endeavour to escort all the women are table, in arms, to the stairs for the bathroom. Our servers were attentive, and all of the prices were quite reasonable, especially in comparison to some of the other restaurants we ate at during our stay, including Antoine's, which was horrible.
My husband and I along with 4 others had dinner last Friday night while we were vacationing in New Orleans. Mr B's was always one of our favorite restaraunts and still is No. 1 in my books. The crabcake was to die for! The rest of the food served was great! The gumbo is still the best anywhere! LOVE MR B's.
We visited Mr. B's for lunch. Found the food and service to be of the same good quality as it was Pre-Katrina. Wait staff was very efficient and friendly. Seafood was of good quality and taste.
Mr. B's Bistro has recently reopened so if you are looking only at the hedline on this page, look further and explore the restaurant's website.
Mr. B's Bistro has never let me down. Their Chicken and Sausage Gumbo is one of my favorites, right up there with One (a fairly new restaurant with fabulous gumbo) and any of Emeril's restaurants. I recommend Mr. B's all the time and I've never heard a complaint. All the entrees are excellent, you just can't go wrong. I've also eaten there with kids and I found Mr. B's very kid friendly.
We called for reservations for party of 2 (but I guess they don't take reservations unless you're in a large party) and they told us it was about a 30 minute wait so they told us to just walk in and get on the list. The place was packed when we arrived but they seated us immediately. Service was friendly and attentive and every dish we had was a winner. I felt rushed through dinner though. With drinks, appetizers and entrees we were out the door in 60 minutes. They definitely know how to turn tables FAST! No wonder they tell people to just walk in.
A group of four women, arriving a bit late to have a full dinner. didn't matter. We had a great meal, with excellent service. We closed the place on a Wednesday night, and to celebrate we got dessert free.
Mr. B's was mediocre at best. The wait staff was average and seemed a little miffed when we asked questions about the menu. There were shells in my crabmeat appetizer (they did take if off my bill at least). My filet was average and it came with a side of potatoes that was 4 thinly sliced (potato chip thin) potatoes. I was very disappointed and do not recommend this place in a town with so many exceptional restaraunts!!
I like Mr. B's but last lunch visit we had problems. One persons chicken was dry as toast and tasted exactly like it had been cooked the day before. My pork chop was bloody rare. When I sent it back, a different waiter brought it back 2 minutes later, nuked. My vegetables were microwave mush and since microwaves don't get pork to the right temperature, it was still rare. I sent it back for keeps. They did take it off the bill.
Service was a bit spotty, with 3 different waiters waiting on our table at different times. Overall, Mr. B's isn't what it used to be. Atmosphere is great, but seems to be coasting in the food/service departments.
My friend and I went there for Sunday brunch over Labor Day weekend. We were seated promptly. However, the waiter was not very attentive. After giving us our order, he didn't bother check on us the rest of night. He was too busy servicing other tables. We actually had to ask the host for our check because we could not flag down our waiter. The food was above average. I had the BBQ shrimp, which needed to be peeled by hand. My friend had the shrimp angel hair pasta and said it was subpar. For dessert, they ran out of the one we wanted (at 1pm in the afternoon?) The real only plus with this place was the jazz ensemble that played. Other than that, I wouldn't recommend this place. Too many other establishments in New Orleans with better food and service.
This restaurant has incredible food and service. I had the soft crab which was the best that I have ever had. Also, the desserts are fabulous- I went with a large group of people and everyone really loved the food and the experience. A bit pricey, but well worth it.
Upon arriving we were sent to the bar (of course) to wait for our table which we were told would be a 30 minute wait. Waited 15 minutes to be served at the bar (which we never were) then we were promptly taken to our table. Service was slow. The orders were wrong. Food was cold. Dinner took 3 1/2 hours. Will never go back and would not recommend it.
We stumbled on this place by accident one night and what a find it was. From the phenominal service to the food, it was worth every penny. We ordered the Veal Osco Buco which fell off the bone. This was a prix fix dinner for $35.00 which included an appeitzer, dinner and desset.
We had brunch at Mr. B's. Everything was tasty. I was particularly impressed with the beautiful poached eggs. Service was very satisfactory and professional. You have to have experience to work at a Brennan's-owned restaraunt, so you can always expect professionalism. The decor is very nice too. It was a little pricey, but what in New Orleans isn't? I enjoyed myself, but wasn't floored. Then again - it was just brunch... not exactly a showcase for culinary talent and every chef's bane.
After others repeatedly recommended this place, I stopped in for jazz brunch this past week on my most recent trip to New Orleans. It's newly renovated and both the ambience and the service are tops. We LOVED the jazz trio playing Dixieland and old standards. The Gumbo Ya-Ya was everything we were told it would be. Our other entrees, the angel hair pasta with shrimp and the chicken pontalba, were nothing special. Even so, we'd definitely give it another chance because of the Gumbo Ya-Ya and the service.
It has been a few years since I've had the pleasure of dining at Mr. B's, but the memory of my last few visits still burn bright -- comfortable but well-attended experience, roasted garlic appetizer and a chocolate cake so rich it's worth a trip just for that. Think about indulging just for a drink or dessert after a play or dinner elsewhere.
