McMoRan Exploration Company engages in the exploration, development and production of oil and gas offshore in the Gulf of Mexico and onshore in the Gulf Coast region with a focus on the significant reserve potential the company believes is contained in large, deep geologic structures located beneath the shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico shelf and often lying below reservoirs where significant reserves have been produced, commonly known as the deep shelf. The company is also pursuing plans for the development of the Main Pass Energy Hub project, located at its former sulphur facilities at Main Pass Block 299 in the Gulf of Mexico. This project includes the transformation of its Main Pass sulphur facilities into a facility for the receipt and processing of liquid natural gas and the storage and distribution of natural gas.
