General Info
Steven L. Allen, MD, FACP, is a hematologist-medical oncologist at Monter Cancer Center and system head of benign hematology at Northwell Health. He is also associate chief of hematology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and North Shore University Hospital. His focus is treating patients with benign and cancerous blood disorders. “I consider my patients’ individual needs and preferences while providing them with state-of-the art treatments,” he says. Conditions he manages include low red blood cell counts, low platelet counts, chronic myeloproliferative disorders, and myelodysplastic syndrome, as well as acute and chronic leukemias, lymphomas, and multiple myeloma. Dr. Allen prescribes a variety of medications such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, anticoagulants, and clotting factor replacements. He has been the principal investigator for numerous drug trials and has collaborated with several basic science labs, resulting in nearly 160 publications. Dr. Allen earned his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He trained in internal medicine and hematology/oncology at NewYork Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. “I was attracted to this subspecialty because I could treat challenging medical conditions and participate in cutting-edge research,” he says. At Northwell, he collaborates with hematopathologists, radiologists, and other hematologist-medical oncologists to discuss each patient’s treatment. A dedicated nurse practitioner is also an important part of the care team. Depending on the patient’s condition, Dr. Allen may also work with cardiologists, infectious disease doctors, and other specialists. Dr. Allen is a professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He is active with the American Society of Hematology, having served in numerous leadership positions and committees. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, Empire State Hematology and Oncology Society, and the American College of Physicians. He served for many years on the medical board of North Shore University Hospital. For Dr. Allen, the best part of his work is his patients. “One of the things I enjoy the most is developing long-term, personal relationships with them,” he says.
