General Info
Elliot Ian Grodstein, MD, performs transplant and hepatobiliary surgery for children and adults. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons and member of the American Society of Transplant Surgery, Dr. Grodstein keeps a close eye to innovations in transplantation and surgery for the liver, bile ducts and gallbladder. During his fellowship at University of Wisconsin at Madison, Dr. Grodstein was involved in the early trials of normothermic machine preservation of the liver, a new way of preserving livers so more are available for transplant. Today, he is involved with many organizations, like the United Network for Organ Sharing, that advocate for improvements in transplant and liver care. Some of his greatest joys include serving on patient-level advocacy groups like the Transplant Recipient International Organization, where he can hear the concerns of transplant recipients and find solutions. Ever since he was a child, Dr. Grodstein knew he wanted to be a transplant surgeon. One day while driving to a football game, his father, a kidney specialist, called a patient who had been on dialysis for seven years. It was their turn to get a life-saving gift—a kidney transplant. By the time they reached the stadium, Dr. Grodstein realized he wanted to be a part of these special moments for the rest of his life. Dr. Grodstein knows there is no small surgery for any patient. He treats each operation as if it were for a member of his own family—a compassionate approach to care that’s featured in the critically acclaimed Netflix docuseries Emergency NYC. And, since Dr. Grodstein is part of Northwell Health, you can expect access to an entire team of transplant and liver professionals, from radiologists to pathologists to medical doctors, who all feel the same. You may only see Dr. Grodstein—but your unique care plan has been crafted by many experts in the field of liver medicine and hepatology.
