      James D. Sullivan, MD, FACS is a surgical oncologist who is double board-certified in general surgery and colorectal surgery. He is the director for Imbert Cancer Center and the director of robotic strategic initiatives central and eastern region. With more than 30 years of experience, he performs advanced robotic and laparoscopic cancer surgeries, specializing in the colon, rectum, stomach, liver, pancreas and spleen. As part of a multidisciplinary team, Dr. Sullivan uses the most up-to-date techniques and technologies available to diagnose and treat cancer while minimizing discomfort and shortening recovery time. He was the first surgeon at Northwell Health to perform robotic colectomy surgery and led the way for Long Island Jewish Medical Center and North Shore University Hospital to become recognized as Centers of Excellence in Robotic Surgery by the Society of Robotic Surgery. He also helped Northwell become the first health system in the U.S. to be recognized as a Network of Excellence for Advanced Robotic Surgery. Dr. Sullivan started his career at Northwell in 1987 as an intern. He finished his surgical residency in 1992, then went on to complete a residency at the Cleveland Clinic and become a Fellow of the American College of Colorectal Surgery. These days, Dr. Sullivan passes on his knowledge to the surgeons of tomorrow as an assistant professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Dr. Sullivan has been a Castle Connolly Top Doctor for more than 15 years consecutively. He is a member of multiple professional societies, including the Society of Robotic Surgery, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery, American College of Surgeons, Society of Surgical Oncology and the American Society of Breast Surgeons. For Dr. Sullivan, the most rewarding aspect of his career is helping patients recognize their inner strength. “When patients first come to me, they’re scared and wondering about their future,” he says. “When I see them later on in life, I get to remind them how they pulled through and bounced back. They’ve taught me a great deal about resilience.”
