  I saw Karen again six months later, at another Chamber function and she told me she is feeling great, had a wonderful trip and her car is running well now. She thanked me for all my help, but she still does not think she’ll need the insurance because as a personal trainer, she is in excellent health. A year later, I heard from an acquaintance that Karen was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. A few weeks later, Karen wanting to know if she can still apply for a catastrophic health insurance policy. That would be like contacting Geico and asking them for car insurance after you’ve just been in an accident and totaled your car. Last I heard, Karen sold her townhouse and moved back home to live with her Mother.

  When I was a freshman in High School, I became close friends with Judy (not her real name) in my gym class. We were always the last two people chosen to be on any team because we were athletically challenged. Our bond grew from there. During the middle of our sophomore year, Judy met and began dating Steve (not his real name), a senior. They quickly became a “hot item”. I rarely saw Judy anymore because she was spending all of her time with Steve. Over summer break, I got a job as a math tutor and spent every weekend working as a candystriper at Misericordia Hospital in the Bronx, New York. On the Sunday before I returned to school, Judy surprised me by visiting me at the hospital. She said she had some very surprising news to tell me. I jokingly said, “you’re getting married, right”? Judy stared at me and said, “how did you know”? We both stood in the lobby of the hospital in shock! I was so happy. Not only was Judy getting married, but she was also four months pregnant. She asked me to be her Maid of Honor.After a lovely wedding, Judy took off a semester from school to have their baby. Judy’s uncle, who was an insurance professional, advised her to purchase Term Life Insurance. Even though they were both young and healthy, he explained the necessity to prepare for the unexpected especially since they were about to become parents. Judy and Steve got a Term Life Insurance policy with a $300,000 face amount.

• Disability Insurance
  But what if you are diagnosed with an illness such as cancer or have an accident and cannot work. How will you pay your rent, mortgage, car note, utilities, groceries, and other everyday living expenses? Unless you have disability insurance or money set aside for an emergency fund, you will have a financial crisis to go along with your medical crisis.
• Long Term Care
  Her cousin’s husband blamed himself because when they got married, they consulted with a financial planner. He recommended that since they were in their late twenties, they should get Long Term Care Insurance. The younger you are, the less expensive it costs. In their case since they were both professionals and made a combined annual salary of $87,000 a year, they could have easily owned an excellent plan at a very low premium. They both decided to pass on the advice. They felt that the odds of them needing long term care insurance were slim to none. So why give money to the insurance company unnecessarily when they could use the money for so many other things.
• Dental Insurance
  At a very young age, I understood that dentists are vital to healthcare. It’s hard to say what the cause of my appendicitis was, but if Dr. Peck had not given me such a good oral cleaning, I may not be here today to write about this incident. This is why I am such a proponent of dental insurance. Dental care is not expensive, Dental neglect is.
• Vision Insurance
  Now that my client owns a separate Vision Insurance Plan, she visits an optometrist annually.  With the new eye glasses, she no longer has headaches associated with eye strain.  She is also surprised at the cost savings of having Vision Insurance.
