- Tennessee School for the Deaf, located in Knoxville, Tenn., offers an individualized and comprehensive educational program. Established in 1844, the school provides modern curricula, materials and methods for the purpose of preparing students for adult life. Its instructional program serves students from preschool through grade 12. Students receive instruction in language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, computer technology, vocational education, independent living skills, physical education and health, using a curriculum that is specifically designed to meet the educational needs of hearing-impaired students. Its individual education plan develops speech skills and makes occupational and physical therapies available to those who need to master basic motor skills. Its Comprehensive Educational Resource Center offers a full array of diagnostic and therapeutic services, including audiological assessments, hearing aid evaluations, psycho-educational assessment, counseling, social services, sign language instruction, media services, behavior assessment and intervention.
