General Info
Prevention and Protection of Abused Children, Inc ( PPAC ) began in 1983 as a grass roots response to the increasing problem of child abuse and neglect. PPAC provides quality family programming, as well as child maltreatment prevention services to children that are at risk of or have experiences child abuse and neglect. PPAC is dedicated to enhancing family life through intervention, prevention, and ongoing education. Due to the increasing need for more extensive in-home Supervised Visitation, the Emergency In-Home Visitation program was established in 1994. This program operates with a "Pool" of social workers who are called upon at the request of Waukesha County Department of Health & Human Services to provide short term, but intensive support to families who are at risk of having a child removed from the home. In-Home support includes parent education, home management instruction and ongoing documentation of family functioning. A Visitation Coordinator position was created to engage the family in family assessment and case planning regarding supervised visitation access to help maintain and enhance family relationships. The goal is to enable children to maintain their relationship with their parents by facilitating and providing visits as soon as possible after a child has been placed in out of home care. In 1996, the Waukesha County Department of Health & Human Services expanded its existing contract with PPAC to include a Parent Support Worker position. This worker is housed within Human Services and acts as an assistant to the Human Services staff. Specifically, this job is to help prevent and reduce the abuse and neglect of children by their parents. On April 1, 2000 PPAC obtained coordination and administration of the Parents Place contract. Parents Place is Waukesha County's Family Resource Center for families with children ages 0-18 that collaborates and maintains a network of community service providers while offering services like parent and child educational and support groups, information and referral, crisis support, on-site child care, networking opportunities, community awareness and special events. PPAC also acts as a leader in the advocacy arena for children at the local, state, and national level. Relationships and participation in the Waukesha County Prevention Network, Waukesha County Safe and Stable Families Project, Safe Havens Advisory Committee, United Way, Waukesha County Community Council, Right From the Start Coalition, Child and Family Services Advisory Committee, Supervised Visitation Network and the Wisconsin Prevention Network assures a strong network of resources for the families served through PPAC at Parents Place. Prevention & Protection of Abused Children receives it's funding from Waukesha County Department of Health and Human Services, United Way, Community Development Block Grant, Safe and Stable Families, Greater Milwaukee Foundation, Roundy's Foundation and other grants and donations.
