Building a custom server option for a client needs to be approached from a multi-faceted viewpoint. For instance, the obvious question that will come into play is cost and ROI on the initial investment which will help determine a guideline towards pricing the build for the customer. In building a custom platform, cost will determine the complexity inherent in the system itself. Does the customer require large I/O capability for the system storage? Are they conducting large video or graphical renders? What particular tasks is the client needing to accomplish with their system? As technology itself continues to evolve, the capital expenditure used for the system build typically goes further and further nowadays. $1500 spent on core components (main board, RAM, drives, etc.) will far outperform the same system built even five years ago! This is something to consider not only as a system builder, but also help make the client aware of the rapid change in technology. Consider the ROI that the client expects to receive from purchasing your end product. Take into consideration the system requirements of future versions of the software that they use; Will the hardware support these inevitable updates that will occur? Last, but certainly not least, consider what added value can be brought to the table to help push the client's decision to spend capital with you. Are you able to offer an extended warranty on your product? Generally speaking, most large computer manufacturers offer only one year warranties for their product. Are you fiscally able to offer a better solution by extending the warranty? Granted, custom built machines will be on-par or more expensive an option for the consumer, but being able to selectively source each component for the build will allow not only massive customization options, but also allow for higher quality components to be selected and implemented into the build. Selling yourself and your product requires not only sales skill and ability, but also the genuine belief that you can offer a better solution to your customer, even if the initial cost for them is higher. Having worked in sales for years has given me the insight that customers are in fact willing to spend more, if they truly are given reasons and understanding why your product offering is better then your competitor.
