Reigner served two terms as president of American Independent Writers (AIW), a Washington, D.C.-based professional association of more than 1,400 writers, editors and journalists, which was founded in 1975. Formerly known as Washington Independent Writers, AIW is the nation's largest regional writers organization. Previously he was elected the organization's vice president. As president, Reigner led a reform movement to reinvigorate AIW. He emphasized increased services as well as professional development, communications and social activities for AIW members, while promoting greater diversity among the membership.
