If you look at it closely, you will notice that the door has no handle outside and therefore can be opened only from the inside! The artist, William Holman Hunt (1827-1910) was telling us that although Jesus wants to enter the home, its up to the person inside to open the door to let him in. 
Although Rev 3:20 was written for the churches, it is also His will that many will receive Him out of our desire after hearing the truth of the Gospel. In short, it is not Gods will that our lives be invaded and overtaken by Him. All Are Welcome
