Mr. Smith was the General contractor who built our house 12 years ago. The roofer that he hired ( and he thinks is now out of business) did not install flashing in multiple areas of our roof. As a result, we had an invisible leak in our bathroom that only became apparent 12 years later. When we contacted Mr. Scotty Smith he informed us that he was covered by a 7 year warranty on the house, even though this was a defect that was not determinable by the homeowner until massive damage was done. Mr. Smith refused to take any responsibility for his poor choice in subcontractors, and was not morally upright enough to accept at least part of the responsibility. Instead, he hid behind the short 7 year warranty. (remember that the house is only 12 years old). Since this damage is not a result of the storms that are common in South Carolina, nor by any storm damage but rather by the incompetence of a sub contractor that was hired by this company, an upright businessman would have stood behind his work and not used loopholes that he can get away with, to absolve himself from any responsibility. Consumers should be warned that Mr. Smith's company does not have the kind of conscience that dictates the right thing to do and not hide behind what you can get away with. He proudly told me that he had been in business for years and had never had any issue like this. All the more reason to do the responsible thing and offer to make the situation right. I could have been writing a letter of praise for a good contractor, one that all consumers should be comfortable dealing with, but instead I am sending a warning to any potential customers. When this company hires incompetent sub contractors, pray that your damage is quick because this man will just tell you that, in essence, it is your problem.
