Dr. Holechek castrated my Arabian stallion this past week. My horse had been in training for seven months but he had gotten very aggressive as a four year old, coming into more and more male hormones and was considered dangerous. My trainer for him had lost patience with him. I had looked forward to using him as a breeding horse. He was in professional training for seven months and did well at first, under saddle, but then wouldn't advance--he was fighting the rider and learning he could be a brat and not cooperate and people would then leave him alone. He had also had a lot of handling since birth, by myself--halter on right after being born, leading, etc., etc. It was not like he was a horse that was ignored. Dr. Holechek had a tough time just getting tranquilizer into him--he was being held by two lead ropes (wrapped around bars at the front of his stall) and still he was moving around and pulling back until he was nearly sitting down! Dr. Holechek was very patient in spite of all of his bad behavior. It took extra drugs to get him manageable and to go under the drugs for the surgery. He got gelded out on the adjacent lawn but not before he got some ACE (lasts 6 hours I understand) and also a shot of penicillin for infection. When he was coming to, he also was wildly thrashing around to get up and rolled over several times. Dr. Holechek was a saint to have had to go through all of this, yet no increase in price to geld him--only $24 extra for more drugs than usually required. My stallion/gelding got rated as his 2nd worst stallion to geld! My horse seems to have a higher metabolism, too, I think--he is very fast. This is the first time I used Dr. Holechek because he was convenient to where I have him stabled now. I was sure he would charge me a great deal more since he had so much fighting with him to get him subdued. He's a bit sullen now since--won't be for a long time before all the hormones are out of him, though. Otherwise, he was a sweet guy--before he got to be a four-year old. He's "family" so guess one has to deal with family when things like this happen. I know where he inherited it from, too, which leads me to believe that line breeding to a specific energetic horse can possibly have lead to how he has acted. He's a lovely grey, too, so now hope he gets back to being a good guy again. I highly recommend Tom Holechek.
