Incorporated in 1779, City of Alexandria, Va., is governed by a city council comprising a mayor and six council members who are elected for three-year terms. The city operates various departments, such as business and economy, environment and nature, government, human rights and services, planning and zoning, schools and libraries, transportation, and real estate services. Its public safety and courts department provides animal control and protection, fire, health, police, and emergency preparedness services. All courts, including circuit court, general district court, juvenile and domestic, and relations district court are governed by courts department. The city also provides various other services, such as employment opportunities, podcasts, e-services, weather, parking facilities, and relief programs to the residents.
