The history of The Times Herald-Record began in 1851 with the Whig Press, founded by John Whitbeck Hasbrouck, which published at its headquarters in Middletown, N.Y. The company changed its name in 1927. TH-R has won many awards, including an American Graphic Design Award, New York State Associated Press Awards and New York Newspaper Publishers Association Awards for Excellence. A number of notable people have been members of the TH-R staff, including Malcolm Browne, who won a Pulitzer Prize covering the Vietnam War, and Hunter S. Thompson, the Gonzo journalist. The Times Herald-Record has a Newspaper in Education program that is part of an international partnership between newspapers and schools to promote literacy and encourage the use of the daily newspaper as a teaching tool. The NIE Department of The Times Herald-Record provides newspapers and educational materials and services to teachers and classrooms.
