Wawa, located in Wawa, Pa., is a privately held company that owns and operates more than 500 gas/convenience stores in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. Its stores are noted for a large food selection, including Wawa brand sandwiches, dairy products, brewed coffee, ready-to-go salads, fresh fruits and produce. In addition, the company is also is a major supplier of dairy products to more than 1,000 institutional customers, including school districts, colleges and universities, hospitals and nursing homes, restaurants and hotels. The company began in 1803 as a New Jersey iron foundry and opened its first food market in 1964. Wawa consistently ranks among Forbes's top 200 privately held companies. 'Wawa' is a Lenni Lenape Indian word for the Canada goose that was found in the Delaware Valley.
