General Info
"Give a man a fish and he eats for a day; teach him to fish and he eats for a lifetime." One type of therapy that I use is called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, in which a client learns how to change the way he responds to a problem in his life. It is generally short term (10-15 weeks) therapy for specific problems, such as anger management. When someone has problems managing anger, it can negatively affect their job, their family life and friendships. Some clients are "mandated" by the court to attend anger management classes for 26 to 52 weeks. With anger management training, the client learns how to incorporate skills such as stress management and thought-stopping, to reinforce his responses to anger-provoking situations. As he progresses in therapy, he challenges old ways of thinking. He developes more empathy for others. With positive responses from co-workers, friends and family, he feels more confident. His relationships improve as he continues to adopt new skills and manage stress without anger. Learning skills to improve your life and your relationships is just one benefit of therapy.
