      Laura Donahue, MD, a hematologist at the Monter Cancer Center, specializes in managing multiple myeloma using hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. As an attending physician in the Cellular Therapy Program, she also cares for people undergoing chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy, a method by which immune system cells called T-cells are altered in a laboratory to better fight blood cancer, then re-infused back into the patient. “I help people understand their diagnosis and treatment options in a way that enables them to make the right choices about their medical care,” says Dr. Donahue. “I also work with them to optimize their quality of life. I strive to create personalized treatment plans with compassion and respect for each patient’s goals of care.” Dr. Donahue discovered her love for science while in high school. “I greatly admired the ability of doctors to help people recover from illness or injury,” she says. She later earned a master’s degree in biochemistry at the Case Western Reserve University and her medical degree at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. She then completed an internal medicine residency and a hematology/oncology fellowship at North Shore University Hospital. At Monter Cancer Center, Dr. Donahue practices a team-based approach to medicine. She collaborates with hematopathologists, other hematologists, advanced practice nurses, pharmacists, and social workers to provide comprehensive care for patients throughout the hematopoietic stem cell transplantation process. In addition to taking care of patients, Dr. Donahue is an assistant professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and is the Collection Facility Medical Director for the Northwell Health hematopoietic stem cell transplant program. She is an active member of the American Society of Hematology and participates in clinical trials for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The most rewarding part of Dr. Donahue’s job is watching her patients become better. “I take great satisfaction in seeing how treatment can help control the cancer and how this translates into a big difference in a patient’s quality of life,” she says. “I’ve also seen how much patients appreciate when a doctor listens to them and respects their medical choices. Working as a team allows us to help patients achieve their care goals.”
