- CryotherapyRetinal tears increase the chance of developing a retinal detachment. Fluid vitreous, passing through the tear, lifts the retina off the back of the eye like wallpaper peeling off a wall. Laser surgery or cryotherapy (freezing) are often used to seal retinal tears and prevent detachment.

- CataractsCataract is a condition that causes a loss of transparency in the lens of the eye. This “cloudiness” causes a loss of light entering the eye and results in “foggy vision”. Cataracts are most common in people who are over age 55. While it is a condition generally associated with aging, it can effect people of all ages. While there is no know prevention for cataracts, there is evidence that exposure to ultraviolet light (a part of sunlight) and cigarette smoking may speed its development. In its later stages, it may seriously impact vision and require corrective surgery.

The damage to retinal vessels is referred to as diabetic retinopathy.
- UltrasoundWith traditional cataract surgery, the surgeon creates incisions in the eye using a small blade. An opening is made in the capsule containing the cataract with small forceps, and the cataract is removed from the eye using ultrasound energy. While this technique has historically resulted in excellent results, the laser now offers a level of accuracy and precision previously unattainable by surgeons’ hands alone.
