General Info
The Pontchartrain Levee District was created by the Louisiana Legislature in 1895. The district offers flood protection services for residences on the east bank of the Mississippi River for a six Parish area, including East Baton Rouge, Iberville, Ascension, St. James, St. John the Baptist and St. Charles in Louisiana. It conducts studies to develop alternatives for ecosystem restoration and flood damage reduction. The Pontchartrain Levee District protects more than 5 lakh residents in the six Parish area, as well as incorporates evacuation routes for over 1 million people. The district operates on an annual budget of nearly $5 million. Its engineering, design and construction assignments include the Westshore of Lake Pontchartrain Hurricane Protection, St. James Hurricane Protection, Bayou Manchac Flood Control and St. Charles East Bank Urban Flood Control projects.
