In 1996, Piedmont Poultry in Lumber Bridge, N.C., was purchased by Mountaire Farms and named Mountaire Farms of North Carolina. Mountaire Farms is a leading vertically integrated poultry processor, servicing customers from coast to coast and internationally. The processing plant was updated and substantially expanded, including the addition of a further processing facility. This operation also produces retail, wholesale and export products. The further processing division produces value-added products, such as premarinated boneless skinless chicken fillets, marinated roasters and Sizzlin' Sensation meal kits for retail supermarkets. Contract growers in the Candor, N.C., to Lumber Bridge area grow the live chickens for these operations.
