Before becoming an orthodontist, Dr. Stephen T. Hicks practiced as a restorative dentist for ten years. His experience provides him with extensive knowledge in general, cosmetic, and restorative dentistry—all of which are vital to our orthodontic practice. Adding to our expertise, Dr. Bancroft McMurphy is a trained periodontist (gum specialist) and orthodontist. His knowledge of the appropriate treatment for common gum problems is incredibly valuable to our patients undergoing orthodontic treatment, ensuring a complete healthy and beautiful smile.

  Keep your retainer clean, too, by brushing it gently with a toothbrush and toothpaste. You may also soak it in denture cleaner as instructed by your orthodontist. Do not put your retainer in boiling water or in the dishwasher.

  Orthognathic surgery is a corrective jaw surgery that is more commonly known as TMJ surgery. It treats and corrects abnormalities of the facial bones, specifically in the jaws and teeth. These abnormalities can cause difficulty chewing, talking, sleeping and other routine activities. TMJ surgery corrects these problems and, in conjunction with orthodontic treatment, will improve the overall appearance of the facial profile.

  Your mouth is scanned with a radiation-free laser, and in as little as two to three minutes, the laser renders a digitally perfect, 3D impression of your teeth and soft tissue structures. Through digital software, you'll then be able to follow the progress of the scans, including a 3D model of your teeth on our computer screen. The iTero scanner can be used for any orthodontic treatment, including Invisalign®.

  When you have braces, it's very important to brush and floss after every meal in order to keep your teeth and gums healthy throughout your orthodontic treatment.   After dental school, Dr. Hicks joined the US Navy and provided his excellent services to our country’s bravest. In 1984, Dr. Hicks moved to Mobile, Alabama and opened his private practice in general dentistry. In 1992, he sold that practice, and attended the University of Western Ontario to receive a two-year Master’s degree in
