University of Massachusetts Lowell is one of the leading providers of higher education in the United States. Formerly known as the Lowell Normal School, the university was formed by the merger of Lowell State College and Lowell Technological Institute. It has been operational for more than 90 years, and enrolls over 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students. University of Massachusetts provides various intercollegiate, intramural and recreational sports programs, such as basketball, cheerleading, golf, track and field, cross-country, baseball, tennis, badminton, swimming, soccer and softball. Its courses include liberal and fine arts, vocational and instrumental music, professional studies and teacher education, elementary and secondary education, reading and instructional technology, media management, English and mathematics, business management, economics, and world history. The university also offers majors in neuroscience, childhood education, mass communication, agricultural and industrial arts, and foreign languages and literatures.
