The American Legion, chartered in 1919, is one of the largest wartime veterans organizations in the world. It is a nonprofit community service organization that has more than 3 million members in over 15,000 posts worldwide. The organization serves veterans and their families. It administers The American Legion Junior Shooting Sports Program, which is a three-part program. The American Legion also organizes oratorical contests. The organization provides scholarship programs for the children of killed military personnel. In addition, it manages Legion College, which prepares youths to hold leadership positions in posts, districts, counties, areas and departments through educational and motivational programs. The organization honors The American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year annually.
