- Medical Weight LossDiet and exercise are the primary ways we should be thinking about eliminating unwanted body fat and living a healthy lifestyle. However, sometimes the body retains fatty tissues in spite of our healthy choices. Tummy Tuck procedures are designed to eliminate excess skin and stubborn fat that persist even with diet and exercise. This fat and excess skin can often develop after pregnancy or significant weight loss.
- Pregnancy
- Labor and DeliveryAbdominoplasty is more commonly known as a “tummy tuck,†but that term finds less traction when the procedure is performed on men. This is largely because “tummy tucks†are often associated not only with women, but with correcting the trauma experienced by the body during labor and childbirth (not to mention the act of mothering). The stresses experienced by the male body as time goes on are, to be sure, generally less severe than labor and childbirth, but that doesn’t mean that the discomfort caused by that excess skin is any less legitimate. In the case of men, this excess belly tissue is often caused by a combination of weight loss or weight gain and aging.
- Carpal Tunnel SyndromeIf you are diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome, and are experiencing compression of the nerve to your hand, the appropriate surgery designed to relieve that pressure should be performed on the area. This surgery can usually be performed through very small incisions. It is important to know that Dr. Polsen performs over 95% of these surgeries endoscopically. Having your carpal tunnel surgery performed endoscopically can dramatically decrease the amount of post operative pain and dramatically decrease the amount of time needed to start using your hand in a normal manner. This surgery consists of making a small incision in the palm, and then cutting the transverse carpal ligament, relieving the pressure on your media nerve. Because carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure on the media nerve, this procedure is designed to eliminate the pain, discomfort, and numbness caused by carpal tunnel syndrome. The ligament, now cut, will eventually fill with scar tissue, and should no longer produce pressure. It is extremely important to note that this is a time sensitive condition. In other words, if a patient waits too long, or there is too much pressure on the nerve, sometimes the patient’s symptoms will be irreversible, very similar to other permanent nerve injuries. Nevertheless, it is equally important to have the surgical procedure and relieve the pressure on the nerve so that the patient’s symptoms are at least halted, and there is no further progression or worsening of symptoms.
- General SurgeryDr. Polsen completed his undergraduate degree at Tulane University with a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry in 1986. That same year he was accepted into New York Medical College. Dr. Polsen’s education as a physician and surgeon is extensive. After graduating medical school, he had complete training in General Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, where he trained at the renowned Hermann Hospital in Houston and the top trauma center Ben Taub Hospital. During Dr. Polsen’s General Surgery Residency he spent one year studying hand surgery under one of the nation’s leading hand sugeons and performing research on hand anatomy that was both published and presented at the National Hand Society Meeting. Following five years of training at Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Polsen was accepted into the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Texas. From 1996-1998, during his three years of residency at University of Texas, Dr. Polsen was awarded first place with the prestigious Clinical Research Award presented to him by the Plastic Surgery Foundation. This training and experience provided Dr. Polsen with the expertise and confidence in aesthetic plastic surgery and reconstructive surgery to give his patients the finest results.
- Hand SurgeryHand Surgery – When issues like carpal tunnel strike, sometimes surgery is the only relief in sigh, and that’s when these procedures become most highly recommended.
- Reconstructive SurgeryThe ear is so important to the overall proportions of the face, though it’s often overlooked by people. Ear reshaping is most often performed as a reconstructive surgery, though it may sometimes be used to accomplish cosmetic goals. Often used to treat protruding ears, ear reshaping shows almost immediate results, bringing balance and proportion to the face.
- BotoxWrinkles can be caused by the muscles under your skin. Essentially, muscle fibers and receptors contract, causing the skin to recede. Wrinkles can also be caused by lax and loose skin. BOTOX® has a proven track record smoothing out fine lines and filling wrinkles for a more youthful, radiant appearance. Although it is best known as a wrinkle remover, BOTOX® has a number of other medical uses as well, including the treatment of severe underarm sweating and pain associated with migraine headaches.
- Brow LiftBrow Lift – Brow lifts focus on eliminating wrinkles and excess skin around the eyebrow and forehead area.
- Eyelid SurgeryIt’s not uncommon for patients to request eyelid surgery in Houston. As we age, the skin loses elasticity, meaning it can no longer bounce back the way it used to. This is a problem when you combine the constant pulling effects of gravity with the hot Texas sun. For this reason, Dr. Polsen sees many patients who suffer from drooping eyelids caused by excess skin.
- LiposuctionBecause liposuction is one of the most commonly identified cosmetic procedures, it is also one that is most often rebranded, using questionable techniques and add-ons, to increase profits. This is why it’s important to have a plastic surgeon you trust and who listens to you.
- Breast AugmentationBreast explant surgery is capable of removing saline or silicone implants. The end results are breasts that appear to be a more natural size. Former breast augmentation patients elect to undergo this procedure for a wide variety of reasons, from a faulty implant to a change in outlook.

- RhinoplastyBecause the nose plays such a key role in the overall proportion of the face, rhinoplasty —or the so-called “nose job†–has become a very common procedure for
- Breast ReconstructionAs cancer can be a traumatizing diagnosis, so too can mastectomy be a traumatizing ordeal, though it is not exclusively caused by cancer. In fact, some women elect to undergo a preventative mastectomy. The last step in recovery from breast cancer and other traumas may be to rebuild the breast tissue, and Breast Reconstruction surgery is designed to do that. While it can never make up entirely for the lost breast, and there will be a difference in sensation and feeling, breast reconstruction can often go a long way in helping a woman feel like herself again.
- Plastic SurgeryWhen choosing a plastic surgeon details matter. Details such as board certification, training, education, experience, staff, and an accredited facility matter. This extensive experience has given Dr. Polsen the ability to achieve perfection in his practice. He has learned that a patient’s journey begins from the time they are greeted by the friendly receptionist and has made a conscious effort to make sure that every detail in their experience does not get overlooked. - Thigh LiftIf you’re considering a thigh lift because you’re unhappy with persistent wrinkles or lax skin, contact Dr. Polsen, a plastic surgeon in the Clear Lake Houston Area with experience in this procedure. Or, you can call his Clear Lake office at (281) 538-6600.
- Face LiftAny surgical procedure can be an intimidating prospect, and that’s true of a facelift. The results are permanent, and the recovery can be painful. A surgical facelift is a major commitment. Many Houston Clear Lake Area patients, therefore, opt for an alternative known as the Liquid Facelift.
- Neck LiftWrinkled necks are one of the most obvious outward signs of the aging process and that’s what a necklift, as performed in Houston by Dr. Polsen, is designed to address. The neck tissue is generally one of the more elastic to begin with, but as we grow older that elasticity wears out, leaving us with loose, drooping skin and more wrinkles than we can count. This can even, sometimes, make your face look much older than you feel. With a neck lift, you can remove excess fat and skin, as well as tighten the entire area for a more youthful look, making you look more youthful and radiant overall. Dr. Polsen is a Houston Clear Lake Area plastic surgeon who understands the importance of your neck lift surgery and would like to confidentially meet with you if this is a path you’re considering.
- BlepharoplastyA wider field of vision: Because eyelid tissue can droop into your line of sight, excess skin can sometimes cause your field of vision to shrink. After a blepharoplasty, patients often see better (due to an increase in light to the eye) and see more (due to that increase in the field of vision).
- AbdominoplastyAbdominoplasty, more commonly known as a Tummy Tuck, may be an appropriate solution for stubborn and unwanted belly fat. When it seems like no amount of exercise or healthy eating will fix your stomach, it may be time to talk to Dr. Polsen, who consults with his patients on any personal transformation they are considering, and has performed many successful tummy tucks.
- Nose SurgeryDr. Polsen will consult with you to determine your ideal nose shape and how to best approximate that. You will also work together to determine the extent of work that needs to be done and, therefore, whether local or general anesthesia will be needed. If local anesthetic is selected, you may also be sedated—mostly because the nose surgery will require you to be very still for around two hours.
- Body LiftFlankplasty reduction (also known as waste reduction, panniculectomy or body lift) Â is generally designed for those who recently lost a lot of weight. If you have a lot of excess skin and fat on your lower body, flankplasty is intended to define curves or musculature that otherwise might be obscured. Flankplasty is different from a lower body lift in that it focuses on the area of the hips, rather than the entirety of the lower abdomen. Dr. Polsen consults with his Houston Clear Lake Area patients on any personal transformation they are considering during a confidential one-on-one appointment, and provides detailed information on all the amazing ways lower body surgery and flankplasty can improve your definition.
- Breast SurgeryDr. Polsen will first meet with all his Clear Lake candidates to discuss the reasons behind their Breast Revision surgery and what the corrected desired result will be. Breast Revision Surgery is almost always done under general anesthesia. In most cases,  Dr. Polsen will try to use the same incision lines as the first breast surgery in order to minimize scarring and promote healing. The surgeon will also swap out the defective or unwanted implant for a new one. Dr. Polsen will work with you to create a personalized plan to get your desired result. As every patient will come in for different reasons with different desires, it’s important to communicate with your surgeon to ensure those desired results.
- OtoplastyThe ear is forgiving, because there are many places to hide any scars that surgery might leave. In most cases, incisions are made on the back of the ear, and that’s also where stitches are administered. Most sutures are implemented on the interior of the ear, which holds the keeps the ear closer to the head and, therefore, more proportional. If incisions must be made on the front of the ear, they are usually limited to one of the easily hidden folds the ear provides.
- Body ContouringCandidates for body contouring for men in Clear Lake, TX, will vary depending on the procedure wanted. Generally, however, Dr. Polsen will look for the following characteristics in successful body contouring surgery candidates...
- GynecomastiaGynecomastia is the medical term for enlarged male breast tissue. A relatively common condition which usually resolves after puberty, it can be especially painful and embarrassing if it persists into adulthood. Gynecomastia can have any number of causes, including drug use and obesity, though it is certainly not uncommon for it to develop for no identifiable reason. Sometimes, gynecomastia can be mitigated through diet and exercise, but often the fatty, fleshy tissue persists and surgery may be the only option to eliminate that tissue. But once accomplished, surgery can have plentiful benefits, including a more youthful overall look, improved confidence, and a more masculine chest.
- Cosmetic SurgeryIf there is one procedure that is nearly synonymous with cosmetic surgery, it’s breast augmentation. In fact, breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed procedures by our Clear Lake Area practice. A breast augmentation is performed to change the shape or size of a breast. In most cases, candidates seek to enlarge the size and even out the shape, but sometimes it’s more about one than the other. Any breast augmentation procedure will be customized specifically for your needs and desires, whether that’s a better fit for your clothing or for your body. Dr. Polsen is discrete, confidential, and ready to consult with you on any personal transformation you are considering, including breast augmentation.
- Bariatric SurgeryHowever, body contouring can also refer to some procedures that are performed after a massive weightloss experience. Sometimes significant weight loss can bring with it a significant amount of excess skin and tissue. In other words, the skin loses elasticity, and because of this, finds it difficult to “spring†back to its original shape. Thus, many patients who have recently lost a significant amount of weight, whether because of bariatric surgery or because of diet and exercise, feel as though their weight loss journey is still incomplete. Excess skin can leave some patients feeling as self-conscious about their bodies as excess weight. Body contouring surgery is designed to eliminate that excess skin and provide a more traditional landscape to the body—in the case of men, creating a stronger, more masculine profile. This is generally accomplished by removing excess skin and pulling the remaining skin taught to form a smoother surface. It can be an intense process, but almost all of our patients for body contouring for men in Clear Lake, TX, have been incredibly happy with the results.
- Chin AugmentationCandidates who seek out chin augmentation in the Houston Area usually have weak or receding chins. But candidates should also be in good health and have realistic expectations of what the surgery can and will accomplish.
- Forehead Lift
- Chemical PeelsSome of us show our age disproportionately on our face and neck. As we age, the muscles relax or permanently tense up, and this creates wrinkles and loose skin. Some patients elect to rejuvenate their faces using temporary techniques, such as liquid filler, Botox to decrease wrinkles, and chemical peels to help smooth out sun damaged skin. Other Houston Area patients seek a more permanent solution. For these patients, a facelift is the primary procedure for achieving a tighter, smoother, more youthful appearance that will have a long term impact. Dr. Polsen’s facelift patients remark that they look and feel both rejuvenated and energized, and that they look younger but still look like the same person (a natural looking result).
