The Third Judicial District Attorney is the prosecuting attorney for the Third Judicial District Court, which covers Dona Ana County in New Mexico. The court has jurisdiction over criminal cases, divorce, child support and custody, domestic violence and probate cases. It also undertakes hearing of general civil cases, such as auto accidents, contract and property disputes and violation of civil rights. It has a children's court that hears cases about abuse and neglect of children, juvenile delinquency and adoption issues. The court operates various programs, such as divorce mediation, alternative dispute resolution and family reunification programs. It also operates a special teen court, where the sentencing consists of writing essays, letters of apology, community service, teen court jury duty and educational awareness classes.
