The Lancaster Parks, Recreation & Arts Department manages parks and open space, as well as runs recreational and cultural programs in the city. It hosts more than 100 athletic programs, community classes, art exhibits and special events every year. The department employs more than 60 full-time and over 200 part-time employees. It maintains more than 500 acres of park area that is available to residents for picnic shelters, barbecue parties, volleyball, tennis, basketball and horseshoe courts, softball fields, swimming pools, playgrounds and walking trails. The department runs various recreational programs, including community classes, day camps and teen courts. It also organizes musical entertainment, theater, dance and cultural shows.
