Andrew Johnson Elementary School, located in Kingsport, Tenn., is part of Kingsport City Schools. Founded in 1953, it offers classes from grades kindergarten through five and enrolls more than 550 students. It provides a variety of opportunities for students to acquire skills and knowledge in a positive environment. Literacy instruction is one of its primary focuses, and reading, writing, science, social studies, and math are integrated to help children create deeper meaning and understanding about each subject area. Children are expected to read a variety of print and learn how to write, using a variety of forms and techniques. Students are involved in many activities at the school, such as field trips, book fair, music and art and library. Andrew Johnson Elementary School parents are also actively involved in serving the school community, as tutors in classrooms, assisting in clerical work and helping in the school clinic.
