Shapiro Developmental Center is an Illinois-operated developmental center. It offers residential programs that serve people with developmental disabilities who have severe medical and/or behavioral needs. Shapiro Developmental Center is one of nearly 10 developmental centers operated by the state s Department of Human Services. The main programs offered by the various centers include developmental disabilities, alcoholism and substance abuse treatment and prevention, health services for pregnant women and mothers, infants, children and adolescents, prevention services for domestic violence and at-risk youth, mental health, rehabilitation services and welfare programs. Shapiro Developmental Center is located in Kankakee, Ill.
