They will say ANYTHING to get you under contract, then throw you under the bus.



I wanted to rent a unit to hold the abandoned items from a tenant who moved out of state & left her items in a home I manage. I asked if we could switch the rental acct into the tenant's name if she decided to have United Storage continue to hold her items - yes not a problem! Then I signed the rental agreement.



A few months into the contract, the tenant wanted to do exactly as described above. I again asked United Storage if this would be a problem - nope. I just had to go in and sign some paperwork. I went in, and a different associate tried to have me sign an Abandonment form instead. When I pointed out the error, he told me according to RI laws, we couldn't simply switch the account over to another person unless they were physically present in their office to do so and they can't even discuss the acct with the tenant as her name isn't on the lease.



I told him I spoke to someone from US who twice told me there wasn't a problem doing a swap with someone out of state. "They were incorrect." He apologized and said he would speak to a regional manager to see if US could facilitate an account transfer by having me sign the docs in their office and having the tenant sign her docs in a sister office in the state she now resides...and he'd call me back.



2 weeks later, same rep calls me back asking me to come in and sign an Abandonment form - total change of tune. I told him no. He started telling me I should tell the tenant to look up their sister locations in her state and basically drive around to those facilities and ask if they will witness her signing a lease agreement for the RI storage facility. I said "you told me YOU would do this and since her name isn't on the lease, no one would speak to her about my acct anyways...wouldn't it make sense for you, a rep from US, to contact a facility, explain the situation, and see if they will be willing to do this?" After all, the misinformation is totally their fault. He hemmed and hawed and said he'd speak to a manager. Never did.



I contacted CubeSmart regional managers since United Storage Johnston is completely inept at their own business, incompetent in RI laws pertaining to their business, and basically suck at customer service - and received a prompt email back that they'd look into it and take care of it. I followed up a week later, and never received a reply.



Avoid United Storage and Cubesmart as a whole. I refused to pay the storage fees and they ended up auctioning the unit I suppose, never heard from them again. HORRIBLE company.

The manager, i think his name was mike was very informative, the other guy i did not care for, did not pay attention to me. very inexpensive and very secure, lots of cameras and barbed wire, the gate looks like a border stop
