Southern Maryland Electric Co-Op, Inc. is a member-owned, nonprofit electric cooperative that serves more than 130,000 customers. Its rates are based on the cost of doing business and surplus income, if any, is returned to its members through capital credits. Its service area includes all of Charles and St. Mary's counties (with the exception of the northern tip of Calvert County) and the southern portion of Prince George's County in Southern Maryland. The co-op provides power to more than 115,000 services making it one of the ten largest electric co-ops in the nation. SMECO offers complete energy conservation services through a partnership with Chevron Energy Solutions Company (formerly Viron Energy Services) and it offers a full range of services from facility electric use audits to complete retrofits of equipment. Its offices are in Hughesville, Md.
