New patients beware. I called to schedule a physical, which would have been covered by insurance. The receptionist told me no problem. The NP saw me and did a great job, but billed me for a "new patient exam." I was surprised - $125 for a twenty-minute check-up. The office refused to change it, claiming that I had been misinformed by the receptionist and all new patients are required to get a new patient exam. So I paid for her mistake- literally.
They also said that because I asked about a particular symptom and talked to the NP about it, the appointment was more than just a physical. If that's true, the NP should have advised me during my visit that I was exceeding the scope of the physical, and should have told me to come in for a follow-up appointment instead of billing me without asking. It's not a patient's responsibility to know when a health question during a physical will convert that exam into a different, very expensive assessment.
This entire process seemed dishonest.
I was with Dr. Thompson since her days working at the Sparrow annex near MSU. I saw only PA's for years and they were always nice and compassionate. I saw Dr. Thompson only once there, right before Sparrow discontinued providing a doctor at that location, and Dr. Thompson was very rude to me. I chalked it up to the Sparrow situation. I followed her to her current location and practice where I no longer saw PA's. After numerous issues with an untrained staff and more occasions where Dr. Thompson was rude to me, I finally decided to move on to a new doctor for some very serious medical issues I have, in which I need a caring and dedicated physician. I am not sure if Dr.Thompson dislikes males, me, or whether she is just an irritable person, but, I need a doctor who cares about me and people in general. Choose your doctor wisely.
