      The Highlands Police Department works to safeguard the lives and property of residents, businesses and visitors, as well as maintains social law and order. It operates a traffic safety division that ensures uninterrupted traffic flow, enforces state and local motor vehicle laws and ordinances and investigates traffic crashes. The department has a special operation division that has homeland security, internal affairs and detective bureaus. In addition, the Highlands Police Department s community policing division supports School Resource Officer, Explorer, neighborhood watch and child identification programs. It supports Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.), which is an educational classroom program that helps to prevent drug abuse and violence among children. The department provides copies of police reports and concealed weapon licensing permits, as well as conducts background checks. The Highlands Police Department is located in Highlands, N.J.
