The DeSoto County Literacy Council was established in 1981 by the First Regional Library in collaboration with area citizen groups. The Literacy Council was established in an effort to provide literacy services to the residents of Desoto County and the surrounding areas. The Literacy Council is committed to improving the lives of individuals by partnering with local agencies including: the Mississippi State Board for Community and Junior Colleges, Northwest Mississippi Community College, United Way of the Mid-South, First Regional Library, and the North Mississippi Literacy Alliance.

The DeSoto County Literacy Council offers tutoring for adults who want to increase their basic reading skills. Every student is given a diagnostic assessment in reading. This assessments provides valuable information regarding the student's strengths and needs in the four components of reading., The DeSoto County Literacy Council also provides a General Educational Development (GED) program. The GED program serves students 18 years or older (17 years old with necessary documentation) who have not received a high school diploma. DCLC provides all necessary materials to prepare students for the GED exam., Because DCLC is a non-profit Agency, all services are provided at no cost., The DeSoto County Literacy Council is committed to assisting the residents of Desoto County and surrounding counties in Basic Adult Literacy and GED preparation. We offer Literacy Classes Monday and Wednesday from 10 am to 12 noon and Tuesday and Thursday from 2 pm to 4 pm. We are now offering a GED Express Class. Students attend class Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students study one area of the GED each week. Every Friday the student takes the one subject area that was covered in class. The class is five weeks. There is a scholarship available for students who enroll in the GED express class. The scholarship pays the $40 GED testing fee.
