Judy mentioned several times that she has 52 years of experience and that she could do a perm in her sleep. She even said “If I can’t do a perm now, I may as well walk out that door”. Interestingly, she didn't use spiral perm rods for my daughter’s spiral perm, only regular rods, and while she did roll it so that the rods ended up going more up and down instead of across, the hair was rolled over and over on top of itself, rather than the hair spiraling around the rod. She rinsed the perm solution out without even checking the curl to see if it needed to stay on any longer. I have never had a perm where the curl was not checked- have you? After rinsing, she had my daughter sit under a dryer while she continued coloring the other client, then finally came and applied the neutralizer.
After she and Kelly took the rods out, Judy combed through my daughter's hair with a comb (NOT A PICK). There appeared to be a good amount of curl when we left that afternoon, but by later that evening many sections were already looking straight.
We followed the directions given us regarding to wait until the next day before wetting it, and to wait 3 days before shampooing (shampooing didn't occur until the 4th day after the perm, just to be on the safe side). There has been progressively less and less curl, and in less than a week, friends were asking whether she was going to get it re-permed, since it did NOT look like it had taken well.
Today it's been 11 days since the perm. We stopped in this afternoon to talk with Judy, since there is little curl in my daughter's hair. She said she'd have to shampoo it and take a look at it. She asked what we wanted her to do. I asked for her to tell us what could be done and what she was willing to do. After washing my daughter’s hair, Judy once again combed it out. She then scrunched it and proclaimed that "There's curl there!" Yes, when it is wet, there is some curl, but as it dries, the curl falls almost completely away. Judy grabbed a can of hair spray and scrunched and sprayed, and scrunched and sprayed. (Apparently she didn’t have any gel to use) She tried to ask Kelly's opinion, and other than saying that it might need shorter layers, Kelly seemed to prefer to stay out of it. If we had been told that shorter layers were needed at the time of the perm, we would have happily accepted shorter layers, especially if it meant better results.
Judy asked me several more times what I wanted her to do. I asked her to refund at least part of the money ($90.00 cash is what we ended up paying, before the tip) and her response was "Absolutely Not! You got what you paid for- there's perm there." Then she asked again what we wanted her to do and talked about possibly re-perming in a couple months so as not to damage my daughter's hair. When I stated that I wouldn't pay to have it permed again, she asked if it was fair for her to have to perm it again. Well, in my opinion, if it doesn’t turn out right the first time, then you SHOULD be willing to fix the problem. I have had a couple perms not take well over the years, and it was always made right. Judy at Tangles does not want to make it right.
Also important to note is that Tangles advertises that you can pay with credit cards, but when the time came for me to pay for my daughter's perm, I was asked to pay in cash since she (Judy) gets charged so much to process credit cards. (I had to raid my other daughter's pet-sitting money to have enough to cover the cost of the perm and a moderate tip). If you (the business owner) don't want to pay the small fee that the company charges to run cards, then don't advertise that you take them, or at least let customers know up front that you prefer to be paid in cash so that they can be prepared!
We will not be back, and are now looking for someone who can fix a bad perm.
