Atkinson Elementary School provides learning experiences for more than 460 students in pre-kindergarten through grade five. It offers the Title I program. The school supports music and chorus activities. It has a counseling department that employs guidance counselors who serve teachers and parents by providing information that assists in meeting the academic and emotional needs of students. Atkinson Elementary School's media center offers an accelerated reader program that is used to monitor and guide reading practices and help students in improving reading abilities. It also conducts classes in math and physical education. The school additionally operates the Beta Club and a student council. It works in partnership with Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Harvest Temple Church of God and Liberty Mutual Insurance. Atkinson Elementary School is governed by the Griffin-Spalding County School System, which was established in 1982.
