General Info

Sheng-fu Larry Lo, MD, MHS, FAANS, is a nationally renowned neurosurgeon who serves as the director of spine tumor surgery. He is also co-director of spinal deformity surgery at North Shore University Hospital and the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He joins us from The Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he served as the director of spinal oncology. He is a complex spine specialist, with special emphasis on spine tumors, spinal deformity, craniocervical junction abnormalities and spinal vascular disorders. A master clinician in his field, Dr. Lo treats some of the country’s most challenging surgical cases and provides thorough care to all his patients. “I always give my full attention with the same compassion and respect that I'd give a family member,” he says. Patients also value Dr. Lo’s conservative approach when assessing the need for surgery, exploring all nonoperative measures first before considering surgical intervention. He tailors each treatment plan, and when necessary, teams up with Northwell experts from other fields, including physiatry, pain management, oncology and orthopedics. Prior to arriving at Northwell, Dr. Lo received his medical training at Yale University School of Medicine, graduating with a combined medical and master of health sciences degree. He completed a residency in neurosurgery, and a fellowship in complex spine surgery and spinal oncology at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Widely recognized for his research, Dr. Lo has been published in more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and has won many awards for clinical excellence, including the Rosenblum-Mahaley Award, Improvement in Patient Safety Award. He was named a Castle Connolly Top Doctor in 2021, immediately upon arriving in New York. As an associate professor at the Zucker School of Medicine, Dr. Lo has additionally been recognized with various teaching awards, including the Excellence in Teaching Award at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He enjoys training the next generation of neurosurgeons and regularly teaches advanced surgical techniques across the country. Board-certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons, Dr. Lo serves on many national and international committees, including the Section on Spinal Oncology for the North American Spine Society, Research Committee for the Lumbar Spine Research Society, and the Spine Tumor Academy. “I truly appreciate the connections I form with my patients,” he says. “To see them healthy and doing well after surgery is beyond gratifying.”

Amazing specialist and my mom went to many before him

This doctor not only has the hands of gold but is very caring and thoughtful. 5 minutes before my mom's surgery he ran into to tell us he found another issue that she needed addressed. Not a single doctor, and she saw 4 before, with more experience, mentioned the thoracic spine. My mom ended up having 2 surgeries with Dr. Lo while he was at Columbia. Before she couldn't walk for more than half a block, now she lost 40 lbs and walks 2.5 miles daily, 3 years later she is better.
