The California Department of Toxic Substances Control regulates hazardous waste, cleans up existing contamination and looks for ways to reduce the hazardous waste produced in the state of California. The department has the responsibility to issue state identification numbers for handlers of non-Resource Conservation and Recovery Act waste. The department is part of the California Protection Agency. Approximately 1,000 scientists, engineers and other specialized staff make sure that companies and individuals handle, transport, store, treat, dispose of and clean up hazardous wastes appropriately. The California Department of Toxic Substance Control maintains its headquarters in Sacramento and has additional facilities in Berkeley, Calexico, Clovis, Cypress, Glendale and San Diego.
