Boarding

I have boarded my dog here several times. The last two the lady who checked us in was so rude!!!! The last four times she has brought huge soft body ticks home. Even treated with frontline. She yelps every time she yawns and she is jumpy when I go to touch her. I have no idea what they did to her this last time, but I'm looking for a new boarding facility from here on out. I can't wake up to my dog in pain and go to
Pet her and find ticks in bedded in her fur. I have never had any infestation issue with her- I spray her with repellent all the time and she has short fur. I'm just sick! Sending the county a complaint too

Took my new pup in today for initial visit. While waiting at the front desk I literally watched a young blonde groomer shove a large golden retriever several times. This "groomer" was sitting down on the floor while attempting to shave this very large dog by herself. She was visually stressed and hostile towards the dog. I informed the front desk staff who quickly let me know they were separate and gave the distinct impression it was not there problem. I then asked to speak with the Manager. While I was waiting I continued to watch the groomer be aggressive towards this dog and no one in the salon or vet office tried stopping it. The manager acknowledged this is a new groomer and appreciated the feed back. I asked her if they video tape and she stated they did. I asked her to watch the past 20 minutes and she agreed. Hopefully she did. The veterinary care we received was OK at best. The vet was in and out in literally 2 minutes. He administered a rabies vaccine without even asking. The only redeeming thing about this clinic was Freddy- Vet Tech. He did a more thorough assessment on my pup then the vet and spent far more time. Overall I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone!

Really bad customer service

I have not experienced worst customer service than the way academy west handled my situation. Be aware coming here, they appear nice if there ends up being no issues with their work. If you encounter an issue (cut while grooming) they assume no responsibility. I had been taking my dog there for a long time to get groomed, everything was good. The last time I took him they cut his rear end, I did not think it was a big deal so I let it pass, however upon being home for a few days, it started bleeding extensively. I reached out to them for help and they turned their back on me, they told me I was held responsible because I waited a week and need to cover full cost. They even tried to deny the cut. It would be a little more reasonable for them to try to deny fault if I demanded my money back, but I just wanted my dog to be seen. Thank you for reading, if you do choose academy west I hope there are no issues with your pet, because they won't accept fault.

We have taken our dog to be groomed there and the groomer is great. However I will never go back. The woman (who I think might be the office manager) was so rude! Our dog was there six hours (she is a 32 lb dog) and left in a small cage. No phone call when she was done ( I called at noon to check on her since we left her at 9 and was told "at least another hour". Finally at 3 I walked in there and asked why they hadn't called and they said we did at noon. I said no I called you and repeated what I was told. I said you have had my dog in this small cage all day. She said well sweetheart (how professional was that) do you really think we would do that. My dog answered her question when I got her outside and she peed buckets! They just lost a good customer. Nobody should be treated like this and my dog might not mean anything to them but she is family to us! Do yourself a favor and go someplace else!

My 9 1/2 yr old pit bull ended up dying from complications of e-coli poison. I had started her on a raw diet thinking it would be better for her and prolong her life. Little did I know. I started the diet 1-2-13 and she died 2-8-14. I took her to Academy West because she has gone here for vaccinations, otherwise she was healthy. We were there twice. first time I had to insist on blood work, second time two days later she was lethargic, cold, vomiting and rear end spasming. The vet said after taking one x-ray, " she is constipated, take her home and leave her in the yard for a while. I can't find anything wrong with your dog, she is healthy and should live many more years." I got one more week. She had all the signs of e-coli I have since found out. And I made it a point to tell him she had been on a raw diet at the first visit. Very casual and careless treatment

Their incompetence and mis-diagnosis killed my dog

I cannot recommend this vet at all. I took my nine year old American Staffordshire Terrier there for vaccinations and minor checkups for about three years. They were nice enough with that, but when my dog got sick about 10 days ago I took her to the vet right away. They did a routine exam and said they couldn’t find anything wrong with her. I insisted on a senior blood panel, which they said was normal. Two days later I came home from work to find her lethargic, cold body temp and spasming in her rear abdominal/intestinal area. I immediately took her back.mmediately. I did not know it but she had also vomited a little in the car. They again said they did not see anything wrong, but took an x-ray which took a long time. apparently the machine was not working right or something. he had asked a tech to try to get a urine sample from her by taking her outside I guess, but that was unsuccessful. He came back in later with the x-ray and said he could find nothing wrong except her colon was backed up and full of poop. his diagnosis was constipation and to leave her in the yard for a while. otherwise he said I had a healthy dog who should live many more years. I got one more week. The following Saturday she woke up with the same symptoms. Unknowingly I'm thinking constipation again. I called the vet and they said just watch her over the weekend and see if she is better, if not bring her in. she continued to worsen, so when I called again I was told the Dr had I wish I could say I had a good experience but truthfully I can't. I have been taking my American Staffordshire Terrier, Shea to this vet for about 3 years now, mostly for vaccinations, once for a bump that was removed and biopsied. for the most part it was good service, but about a week ago I took her there because she was just not acting herself. weak and just sickly. she is nine years old so I don't mess around and took her in right away. they could not find anything wrong, not that they did anything but take her temp and feel her tummy. I requested a senior blood work to be done, which they said came back fine. Two days later I get home from work and she is having cramping in the rear area, around the stomach and intestines, very lethargic and cold body temp. I took her in ileft for the day and there was nothing they could do, I had to go to the emergency clinic. In the meantime thankfully we all spent some time with her, she never acted in pain, just lethargic, cold, and the spasms now and then. But an hour later, she could not stand to walk, so we rushed to the emergency vet. They immediately said she was very critical, and "down" as they put it. After an hour of waiting for them to take x-rays and try to stabilize her, the vet came back and said it appeared that she had a perforated bowel which had leaked into her stomach and was septic. the option was surgery which being an emergency could cost up to $30,000, or to euthanize her. While we agonized and cried over this, my daughter, being a critical care nurse, explained that it was unlikely the surgery would help her. When I went back to see her, I could tell she was going, her eyes were not hers anymore. They put her on a gurney and we got about 5 minutes to say goodbye and then she was gone.In my heart I know that had this vet at Academy West insisted on cleansing out her colon and doing another x-ray, he probably could have diagnosed her correctly and performed the surgery before it went septic and possibly have saved my baby. As it is, I have lost my best friend and a large part of my reason for living. I am so angry at myself for not taking her somewhere else, among many other things. On top of that, when I called them this morning to cancel the appointment I had set on Saturday, I explained some of what happened to the receptionist. the vet has not called me to find out what happened or follow up in any way.

very upsetting

My husband and I took our puppy there for vaccines and had to take him in for boarding for a couple days for the first time. I can tell you now I wish I knew before what I was getting into. My dog lost weight being there even though they charted he ate. He came out very timid and limping which I was never notified that he was ever hurt in there care! He can't walk and won't eat and his foot is swollen 3x normal size. It bleeds out puss and blood when they said he must have ffractured it but the next day say he might have been bit but can't give me any answers! My heart is broken seeing my puppy like this and I will never send him back. There was only one lady I liked there everyone else has attitude and hiding the truth of how they treat the pets. Beware!

Good Samaritan - Thank you

Thank you so much for your love and attention you gave... well we call her "Skidz". We had the unfortunate experience of seeing someone hit a dog and take off - we had the fortunate experience to call and have one of the doctors come down in the middle of the night to treat and care for the animal we stopped to help.I hope someone gives her a great home - thanks again =)

Great Doctor, Great Staff

I have been bringing my cats to Dr Kimmel for a couple years now-- he is really great with my babies and is always willing to keep the costs down when he can. I bring my long hair baby in for grooming- they have a great and compassionate groomer who has worked there for years and knows her stuff! She loves seeing my baby when I bring her in. I recommend this clinic to all my friends because I know that everyone cares so much. They even have adoptions which tells me that the owner is really compassionate about animals. I wouldn't trust my cats in the hands of anyone else!

Expected more

I just moved here. I was very fortunate to have a great vet and groomer. They both loved my dog and was always really good to him. Since we moved across country and to completely different climate I wanted to make sure we had a vet established right away. The first visit the front desk ladies checked us in and took us back to a room right away. I did not have to wait very long for the vet to come. He seemed nice, but in a hurry. He did answer all my questions, but seemed like he wanted to get to the next appointment. This vet barely touch my dog and basically just listened to his heart and quickly gave him two shots. I figured I was being too picky. So I set up a grooming appointment for the next day. When I went to pick him up they told me they nicked his ear. It is healing just fine now, but I found other nicks on his body as well. He has never gotten any nicks in the past. The prices are fair. This place did it's job, but nothing more.My dog is apart of my family and I expect more.

My Pet Got Sick

I boarded my pet there for a week while on vacation. When I picked her up she was not well. She got so sick and I rushed her to my local vet. She had picked up a virus/bug from the kennel. It took her almost another week to recover with medication. NEVER AGAIN

Best vet we have found in north Phoenix

Our 2 dogs are our kids and thus we want to get the best care possible for them. We jumped between a few vets in north Phoenix and while each gave very capable care, we at times had difficulty fitting our 'kids' care around our work schedules and veterinary office hours. We stumbled upon Academy West one day and appreciated their long hours of operation and flexibility in squeezing us in. The staff has always been very friendly, extremely professional, and best of all, the vet (Dr Kimmel) really seems to care about our dogs well being. We have never used the boarding services at Academy West, but as far as pet care goes, we have never been happier. And more importantly, our dogs have never been healthier.

Great Doctor

well by reading those prior comments I would have questioned the place, but I have been there myself with my dog Charlie. The Vet is Great! the technicians were very informative and went over every detail of my dogs surgery and discharge instructions, the receptionist were friendly, and not that fake smile and pretending to be interested in my pet. Most offices are not interested in what go's on in your pets life and just want to see your for what your in there for and get you out. That was not my experience here. I would recomend that anyone interested in a great vet and genuine care go to this hospital. Make your own judgment on your own experience with them. I dont agree with the prior comments. to each their own.

Pet Owners Beware

I don't know about the service of this place in previous years. I do know about the treatment and standards of this place now.Terrible.The first time I took my big dog there I was told they would call me if anything went wrong.WRONG!!When I went to pick him up they informed me of how much trouble it was to get him in a cage and out of a cage. They said it took several employees to work with him. And they never finished clipping his nails because he nipped at them.Did anyone call me??? NOPE.But he looked so cute I brushed it off and went home.Brought him back a few months later for the same treatment. The same treatment had gone up $10 and when the lady gave me my change back she gipped me $10 bucks!! I told her and she was like "Oh, okay, I'll credit your account". She was honestly sorry. However, this is where it goes further downhill. I scheduled to have my smaller dog for a buzz since I already had a "credit" to the account. I told them I had already cut his hair down to half and inc

not impressed

First of all I was expecting to pay around $60 for the visit and shots and I walked out paying $200. They didnt do anything in front of me, which really bothers me. Where Im from they will check out the cat and do the shots and things right in front of you so that you know they did it. How do I know they even performed anything? Then I asked them to clean my kittens ears, which I guess you could say they attempted, but there was still tons of junk in his poor little ears. The medicine for the earmites didnt help...I would never go back to this vet.

Caregivers?

All employees of the hospital are wonderfull! Its the owner that bothers me. He is all about money and not the care of animals excpept his own!! Ive seen behind the doors. Thank god for the loving staff. If not for them, no animal would desirve to go there. Please take in to consideration before going, that they OVERCHARGE, RATKE IS RUDE AND HAS NO BEDSIDE MANNERS, AND THEY WILL DOUBLE BOARD ANIMALS IN KENNELS without your knowledge! (only when told to do so by ratke) They do help with golden rescue and a few other orgs but only for the money. If the rescue groups are running low on funds, they wont be seen untill their accounts are in a "good" standings. HELLO!! Its called a rescue group!! Please take time and investigate your animal care facility. Just because they have been around for a long time doesnt mean that they are the best! It just means they know alot of people and have alot of pull!!
