He brings to our Center unparalleled training, education, experience, and exceptional leadership. After earning his undergraduate and medical degrees with honors from the University of Puerto Rico, Dr. Betancourt interned at the Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco. Soon after, in 1983, he began his ophthalmology residency at the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Dr. Betancourt has kept his clinical skills current through continuing education courses and a lecturing position at the reputable University of Maryland and at the Uniformed Services, University of Health Sciences. Before joining Baltimore Washington Eye Center, Dr. Betancourt served as a flight surgeon in the Middle East and practiced ophthalmology at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center, gaining extensive experience in cataract and implant surgery, laser therapy for retinal disease, and glaucoma treatment. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons, as well as a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the Medical and Surgical Faculty of Maryland.
