Mid-America Apartment Communities is a self-administered, self-managed apartment-only real estate investment trust, which owns or has ownership interest in more than 38,000 apartment units in 132 complexes throughout the sunbelt region of the United States. Created in 1977, Mid-America became a public company in 1994 structured as a self-managed REIT. The company has headquarters in Memphis, Tenn., and is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol MAA.
