General Info
Throughout its existence, the staff and supporters of the Geneva Historical Society have done much to collect and preserve information and material on the history of people, places, and events within the Geneva community. The resulting collections encompass 1300 cubic feet of archives and 30, 000 photographic images, as well as furniture, decorative art, costumes, textiles, fine art, tools and equipment, and four historic properties. The Geneva Historical Society consists of over 1, 000 members in and around the community. The organization is committed to preserving and interpreting the rich culture and heritage of the diverse citizens who have made Geneva the city it is today. Over many years, the Society has been able to support its commitment to preservation through its Fund for Historic Geneva and its restoration efforts at the Prouty-Chew House, Rose Hill Mansion, and the John Johnston House. The Geneva Historical Society Museum is located in the Prouty-Chew House on South Main Street. This facility features period rooms and changing exhibits on Geneva's history and culture. This site also houses staff offices, collections storage, programming space, and the Society's archives and library, which are open to researchers, genealogists, and the public. An important aspect of the Society's efforts is its annual schedule of exhibits and public programs. At the Geneva Historical Society Museum the most frequent offerings are exhibits exploring the people, places, and events in Geneva's history, and lectures, workshops, and children's activities on related topics. On occasion, special events and fundraisers are conducted at one of the Society's other properties - The National Historic Landmark, Rose Hill Mansion; the beautiful Balmanno Cottage; or the Johnston House. It is our sincere hope that if you are in the Geneva area or plan to be in the future, you will find the time to visit us at the museum or at any one of our associated facilities. They are here for your enjoyment! We are always glad to welcome you and to answer any questions you may have regarding Geneva's rich and continuing history. We look forward to seeing you.
