The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California is a federally recognized, self-governing tribe. It is governed by a tribal council and has jurisdiction over trusts and allotments in Nevada and California. The tribal government operates the Washoe Environmental Protection Department, which serves various communities. The department protects and manages land and natural and cultural resources within the territory. The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California has a human resources department that is responsible for the recruitment, classification and training of employees. In addition, the department provides workers compensation and records maintenance and retention services. The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California administers Head Start and Native Temporary Assistance to Needy Families programs.
