General Info
In 1907 at the age of 17, David Goldhirsh imigrated from Austria to New York city. Tired of struggling in New York and in hopes of making a better living, Mr. Goldhirsh joined a friend in Galveston in 1913, and went to work for M.M. Bleich in his corner grocery. A very hard worker, David quickly became a favorite of Mr. Bleich and in 1920 when David Goldhirsh decided to open Star Furniture, Mr. Bleich provided the loan.David and Adele opened Star Furniture at 414 - 25th Street in Galveston. It was truly a "mom and pop" business with the Goldhirsh's as the only employees. Later their son Simon and daughter Frances worked in the store. In 1941 Star Furniture was moved to a three story building at 2424 Market Street. Around this time, better mass production methods were being used by the furniture manufacturers, and Mr. Goldhirsh expanded his offerings by adding new furniture to the mix.In 1944, Frances Goldhirsh married Marvin J. Stein. After Marvin was discharged from the Air Corps in 1946, the couple moved to Galveston. David Goldhirsh asked Marvin to mind Star Furniture while he and Adele took a vacation to New York. Today, 64 years later, you will still find Marvin Stein working in the family business. In December 1973, 53 years after his grandfather started Star Furniture, Ben Jay Stein joined his father Marvin in the family business. Ben Jay, now president said "The Company changed its name to Star "Fine" Furniture in 1978 when Star moved to it's current location at 3727 Broadway." The reason for adding "Fine" to the company name upgraded the merchandising mix to offering fine furniture that even the most discriminating client would be proud to own. Today, this is still the merchandising range that Star continues to offer...Something for Everyone!Jody Stein, Ben Jay's son joined the family business in 1997 and is the family's fourth generation to work at Star "Fine" Furniture. Jody is Vice-President of sales and merchandising and is pleased to continue the family tradition of offering quality home furnishings at affordable prices.Marvin, Ben Jay and Jody invite you to come into Star "Fine" Furniture ( only in Galveston ). It would be our pleasure to meet you and assist you in any way possible. On behalf of all of the employees at Star, we thank you for considering us for your home furnishing needs.
